Common Questions About PIV Cost

Is a PIV unit just the unit, or the whole installation?
PIV installation is the whole system — the loft-mounted unit itself, the ducting, the ceiling diffuser at the top of the stairs, electrical connection to a fused spur, and full commissioning for your property size. Buying just the unit hardware separately is usually £350–£700; the rest of the cost is install labour, materials, and warranty.
Why does a PIV unit cost less than damp-proofing?
Most "damp" in modern UK homes is actually condensation — a ventilation problem, not a water problem. PIV fixes the root cause (high indoor humidity) rather than treating symptoms. Chemical DPC injection or full waterproofing is £3,000–£6,000 because you're treating actual water ingress. Many homeowners pay for damp-proofing they didn't need because the diagnosis was wrong — the free survey confirms which fix you actually need.
How long does PIV installation take?
Most installs are finished in 2-3 hours. One tradesman, one visit. We mount the unit in your loft (or wall for flats without lofts), run the duct, fit the diffuser in your hallway / landing ceiling, wire it into a fused spur, commission it for your property size, and you're done.
Will it make my house cold or noisy?
No. The fan runs at very low speed — most units are inaudible from inside the rooms. Modern PIV units have temperature sensors that throttle back when loft air falls below 10°C. The pre-heater upgrade (+£300–£500) warms incoming air further if you're in a poorly insulated loft or sensitive to cold air. Air enters via a wide ceiling diffuser so there's no localised draught.
What about the running cost?
Around £15–£25 per year on standard tariffs. The fan motor draws 5–15 watts continuously, less than a single LED bulb. Compare that to running a dehumidifier (£300–£600/year) or constantly opening windows in winter (much higher heating bills) — a PIV pays for itself within 2–3 years.
What warranty do you provide?
2-year manufacturer warranty on the PIV unit itself (industry standard across UK brands). 1-year warranty on installation workmanship from us. Units typically last 15+ years with no maintenance beyond an annual filter change.
Can I get a PIV in a flat without a loft?
Yes. We fit a wall-mounted PIV unit in the hallway with the diffuser on the same wall. Same effect, same running cost, same install time. Adds roughly £100–£200 to the standard install price because of the additional ducting work.
Is the quote really free and no-obligation?
Yes. A qualified surveyor attends, inspects the property, takes humidity readings, checks loft access, confirms PIV is the right fix, and emails you a fixed-price written quote within 24 hours. No charge, no pressure, no sales pitch — decide in your own time.
