What a sump pump actually does

A sump pump sits inside the basement in a pit (the sump). When groundwater rises high enough to enter the pit, a float switch activates the pump, which discharges water up and out through a pipe to a surface drain or soakaway.

What a French drain actually does

A French drain is a trench filled with gravel and a perforated pipe, installed around the outside of your property below foundation level. Groundwater naturally drains into the gravel, flows along the pipe, and is directed away to a soakaway or storm drain — before it ever reaches your basement wall.

Best for:

  • Detached or semi-detached homes with space to excavate around the foundation
  • Properties on sloping ground where surface water pools against the house
  • Preventing water from ever touching the basement wall in the first place
  • Stopping rising damp caused by saturated external ground

When you probably need both

In heavy water tables, flood-prone areas, or older properties with saturated external ground, one solution alone won't cut it. A typical combined approach:

  1. French drain outside to drop groundwater pressure on the foundation
  2. Cavity drain membrane (Type C) on internal walls to redirect any water that still gets in
  3. Sump pump to collect and discharge water from the perimeter channel

How to know which you need

Three diagnostic questions:

  3. Is the basement cold, damp, or smelly but rarely actually flooded? Look at crawl-space encapsulation or internal cavity drain before going full external drainage.
